I finally finished Lonesome Dove. I bought the unabridged audio version (36 hours) because I never seemed to have time to to read and I've been trying to read this book for about 5 years. I figured that since I'm in my car so much I'd give the audio books a try and, I have to say, I love them. It took a little getting used to but once I got into it, I found myself eagerly awaiting my next drive.
I think the person doing the reading makes a big difference. The person who did the reading for Lonesome Dove is Lee Horsely and he did different voices for the main characters and I think that helped. The funny thing is, it makes me want to read the book even though I know that if I do, I'll hear this man's voice in my head.
So, Lonesome Dove . . . I loved it but, found the ending a little abrupt. I want to know what happened to everyone. I wanted a pat ending. I hate that Gus and Deets died. I want to know what happens to Newt. Whether Lorena will ever give in and go with Dish or whether one of Clara's daughters will grow up and marry Dish. Whether Clara and July will get together (dumbass July).
I didn't like Clara and was a little disappointed in Gus for idealizing and loving her so.
I wanted to slap July Johnson cuz he was such an ineffective, paralyzed dolt.
Lorena needed a good hard shake too.
I wish Janie had lived.

Am I the only sane person left?
Last night I was at dinner with a friend of mine and she was telling me about her plans for her sabbatical. She’s going to NYC, then London, then Amsterdam, then Brussels, then Paris, then back to NYC, then to Mexico for a week and then back home to the bay area. She’ll be gone 6 weeks total. She’s doing this all on her own and I was telling her how cool I thought that was, asking if she’d like me to get recommendations for hotels (she has booked her flights, not her hotels) from folks I know who are from there and/or who travel there a lot, etc.
So . . . then . . . she starts telling me about how her mother is trying to get her sister to go with her, etc., and how she doesn’t want her sister to go. When I asked why she said, “Well, because going to England with Diane would be like going to England with you.” And I asked what that meant and she said, “Well, you don’t want to go to England.” And I said, “True. I’ve never had an interest in going there. The British people I’ve known are either great, witty people or really awful. There doesn’t seem to be any in between in my experience.”
And then she said . . . “You don’t like the French either.” And I said, “True, they smell.” And then all of a sudden she goes off and starts saying, “Stop being so negative about my trip. You’re just sitting there trying to make me hate the people in the countries I’m going to!” etc. And, frankly, I was a little stunned.
I explained that I had been nothing but supportive and that my agreeing with her about not having an interest in going to England and thinking the French stink was hardly my being negative about her trip, etc., but . . . she just kept going on about it so I just said, “This is nuts.” and left.
I’m slowly coming to the conclusion that I’m one of the very few sane people left on this earth. In some ways, it’s comforting to know that I am. In other ways, it’s a little scary thinking about the future of mankind. I’m hoping that somewhere, on this earth, there are groups of sane people and that maybe someday, we’ll all be mysteriously drawn to the same place and we can create Utopia. Which, for me today, would be a place where everyone is logical and reasonable and no-one gets hysterical. Wouldn’t that be nice?
