Just Shut Up and Work

I'm telling you, some days I just get so sick of people complaining and whining I just want to tell them all to just SHUT UP AND DO YOUR WORK. You're not being paid to come here and whine and complain and ask for ridiculous things. JUST SHUT UP AND DO YOUR WORK and everyone will be so much happier.

Just SHUT UP.

I have a team lead -- yes, the problem team -- who tells me today that he doesn't think that his team can get their projects done on time so he wants me to hire two contractors to help. There are 85 work days between today and when his team's projects are due. They have estimated they need 40 days to complete them. So, when I asked whether he needed to update their estimates of time needed to complete the project, he said no. Then when I asked what the two contractors will be doing, he said he didn't know yet. When I pointed out that they're currently estimating 40 days of work for an 85 work day period and that adding 2 more people means that it would drop down the estimate to 24 days of work in an 85 work day period he said that sounded correct. But, when I asked if adding the two additional bodies would bring the projects in early, he said no.

Makes no sense to me.

I told him I wasn't inclined to grant the request given his complete lack of information or justification for the additional expenditure and he got upset and complained about how I expect him to do his job but won't give him the resources to do it. When I tried yet again to explain the math to him and how his own estimates say that he has PLENTY of time to get everything done, that his estimates don't even require half of the time being given, and how what he was asking for made no sense, he got angry.

What is wrong with people??

Star Stricken

Do you get star struck when meeting, or having the opportunity to meet someone famous? I don't and, I wonder about this.

I spent today at the Raiders/Ravens game. A friend of mine has a friend who plays for the Ravens so he had gotten a luxury box and invited me to come. There were about 15 or so people there including the mother and fiancé of the Ravens player who I’ll call Ken for this piece.

Everyone there, with the exception of myself and 2 other people, were really 49er fans but in this case were Ravens fans because they were friends of Ken and because most 49er fans hate the Raiders (not sure why).

The mother and fiancé spent the entire game running back and forth to the window saying things like, “Is Ken looking?” or “Where’s Ken?” or “Is Ken playing” or “Does Ken have his helmet on?” and just other really, really stupid things. They were like teenage girls stalking a crush. They were hanging out the window of the suite trying to get his attention which was also pretty stupid considering his back was to us and he was concentrating, I’m guessing, on the game.

It got to be really annoying and made me wonder – if you’re the mother and fiancé, why do you need to do that? Don’t you see him frequently enough outside the game to satisfy you? It was so stupid. The guy’s been playing for 7 years so it’s not like it’s a novelty. Usually when they show player’s parents and wives they’re just watching the game. Not turning themselves inside out trying to get their player person to notice them.

Add to this that Ken’s mother must have said, "You can leave" in a semi-joking fashion at least five or six times to me when the Raiders scored or made a great play against her son's team and I cheered animatedly. I had to fight hard to hold my tongue and not say, “At least I’m watching the game and not acting like a 12 year old with a crush on a guy who is ignoring me you idiot.”

And I give myself huge points for not pointing out that they barely beat the Raiders when the Raiders were playing their 3rd string quarterback.

Anyways, after the game, they were all staying and waiting for Ken and several of his Ravens buddies to come up to the suite to hang out and then they were all going out to dinner. I chose not to go and they were stunned. By “they” I mean the mom and fiancé. They were shocked that I didn’t feel privileged to meet their crush and hang out with them and my friend was explaining to them that it was because I didn’t like the Ravens so didn’t want to hang out with a bunch of them. When they looked stunned (idiots) he told them that I liked Ken but since there were a bunch of other Ravens coming, I was going to pass. I finally couldn’t take it and said, “That’s not exactly true, I can’t say that I do or don’t like Ken because, I don’t know Ken.” and walked away with them staring at me with mouths hanging open. It irritated me that my friend was placating them like that.

The thing that I found odd was that the most star struck of the 14 other people there were the mom and fiancé (which is weird enough) but, the other 12 people seemed somewhat star struck as well and whether they were going to dinner or not, were hanging out waiting to meet this group-o-Ravens. It was weird but it made me wonder whether they’re the norm and I’m the exception because I truly couldn’t care less about meeting them.

I never get star struck. Cliff Branch came into our suite today to meet us and my friend got all excited and dragged me over to meet him thinking I’d be wowed cuz he is an old, great Raider player and I just stood there. My friend kept saying, “This is Cliff Branch! He played in 3 Super Bowls with the Raiders! He was a great player.” And I just stood there saying, “I know. Nice to meet you Mr. Branch.” in a polite manner. It got kind of uncomfortable so I finally said, “Sorry but, I just don’t know what you want me to say.” Branch laughed, said it was nice to meet me as well and I said “Thanks!” and walked away.

Am I the exception? Why do people get star struck? They’re just people. I’ve met lots of famous people in my life – mostly musicians, some sports figures and politicians. Living in the bay area lends itself to opportunities for that but, I’ve always been unstruck by it and people always seem disappointed. And, frankly, I think they’re weird for being star struck. On the way home I was trying to think of someone that I would be star struck to meet and couldn’t come up with anyone. I’m pretty sure that makes me the odd man out but, what is the phenomenon that causes people to act like that?

I have nothing against famous people, I just treat them the same as anyone else I meet but apparently I’m not supposed to. Oh, well. Maybe I’m a sociopath?
