So, the fling . . . where did I leave off . . . oh yeah, Sunday.
So, after dropping AA off at home on Sunday, I came home and slept and recuped. On Monday he called and we agreed I'd go out there on Monday (President's Day). I woke up, got ready, headed out to his place. I had work to do so I got there, we hung out for a short bit and then I started working. He had stuff to do as well so we were both working on our computers, chatting, and actually . . . it was nice.
He left for a bit that evening to go to an AA meeting and then when he got home he made dinner, we ate and then we went to bed. I left Tuesday morning to go to work.
The funny thing is . . . when I was with him, we had a great time, got along really well, had fun, laughed, etc., but the minute I would be away from him, I would have these MASSIVE waves of doubt. My gut would be screaming that something wasn't right. I talked about this with a couple of friends and I wrote it off to being concerned about our different lifestyles, etc.
But . . . I should have listened to my gut. Something was very, very wrong.
Tuesday afternoon around 3:00 p.m. we were chatting on the phone -- he wanted to see me but had a birthday party to go to at 4:30 so wanted to know what time I would be coming out there. In the middle of our conversation the phone went dead. I figured one of our cell phones dropped the call so called him back . . . no answer. I left a message asking if he was okay and after a couple of hours, hadn't heard back from him.
So, I started getting a little concerned -- he has a heart condition and I thought maybe something happened to him so I called and texted a couple more times. Silence. Finally, 5 hours later, he texted saying he was at a meeting and would call when it ended in 5 minutes. I was glad to know he wasn't dead on the floor but . . . an hour later, he hadn't called.
Finally, an hour and a half later, he called. He said that he had gotten a ride with some friends so got stuck cuz they wanted to stay after and chat. No problem but . . . my radar was saying something wasn't right cuz he could have sent quick text (since he had texted saying he'd call in 5 minutes) letting me know but I decided to ignore it. He said he wanted to see me on Wednesday and that he'd call me in the morning.
Wednesday morning came and he didn't call. Not a problem, I was busy at work. By the afternoon I decided to call him -- no answer. I left a message, no response. A couple of hours later, I sent a text, nothing. Now, it's not really a big deal but, two days in a row and I'm not sure if this is just the real him -- saying he will do something and not doing it -- or if something's happened to him, or what.
By 8:00 that night, I still hadn't heard from him. So I decided that . . . it was time to listen to my gut and end this thing. So, I left him a message asking him to call me and a couple of hours later he did. I didn't ask what happened, etc., I just told him that I didn't think this was going to work. He tried to give me some long story about why he didn't call, etc., and I listened and told him that I appreciated the info but, was sticking to my decision.
Thursday morning I was getting ready for work and he called to say that he was on his way to the VA hospital in Palo Alto to drop off some films of his for his neurologist to look at and wanted to stop by to chat. I said okay and he showed up 10 minutes later. He apologized and asked me to give him a chance and I reluctantly agreed (it's hard, when in his physical presence to not give in cuz he's so damn HOT HOT HOT). He left to go to the hospital and I finished getting ready for work.
When I went to leave for work . . . I couldn't find my keys. I looked around, finally gave up and grabbed my spare. I went outside and then . . . couldn't find my car.
Yep . . . he took my car.
So . . . yeah . . . he stole my car and went on a drinking binge. Why did he take my car? I dunno. I spent Thursday and most of Friday freaked out, not knowing what the hell happened, what was going on, if I was ever going to see my car again, etc. On Friday, I contacted his daughter to see if she knew anything about it and . . . according to his daughter, this is what he does.
He's done it to every family member, every girlfriend, and most of his friends. When he goes off the wagon, he takes someone's car and disappears. They assured me that he would bring my car back and that everything would be intact but he sometimes disappeared for 2 to 4 days.
I had talked to the police and they said that if I reported it stolen, it could be a big problem for him and that I should think about it. His daughter also told me that everyone lets him get away with it cuz he charms them when he gets back and that she was okay with me turning him in . . . in fact, she wanted me to turn him in hoping it would slap some sense into his head.
I thought about it for a day and on Friday, reported it stolen. I had been calling him and texting him to try to figure out what was going on but, nothing. The police said to keep trying to contact him and to be nice and try to figure out where he was and get him to come back. So, I kept calling and texting every couple of hours and finally, on Saturday, around noon, he answered the phone.
He admitted that he had my car and said he was getting ready to bring it back. I asked when and he said he'd be at my place in about an hour. I hung up and called the police and they said they'd have some cruisers hanging around my place to catch him but to prepare myself for him not showing up.
And . . . they were right, he didn't. They cruised around for several hours and gave up -- they told me to call 911 if he showed up. I sat up waiting for him until around 8:30 p.m. and then decided to go to bed. I hadn't slept except for a couple of hours since Thursday and was more stressed out than I'd ever been in my life. I conked out and . . . at 3:30 a.m., my phone rang.
It was him and he said he was pulling into my place right then. I hung up and called 911. He called me back and asked me to let him in, I told him I was in the bathroom (I was stalling) and he said, "Oh, I have the key here on the key ring, right?" -- I explained that no, he didn't because I had the locks changed Friday morning. He said he understood.
He asked if I could give him a ride home (I still don't know how he got to my place Thursday morning) and I said that I would -- to stall him.
Long story short, the police were at an emergency so didn't get there for 90 minutes. I had to keep stalling him for all that time. I was so stressed out that I was shaking. He kept calling me every 5 or 10 minutes to bug me about taking him home. I told him, several times in a couple of different ways, "Dude, you stole my car and had it for 3 days, you can just freaking wait for me to get ready and calm down cuz you've freaked me out."
They finally got there, got him out of the car at gunpoint, and arrested him. They kept him in jail for 3.5 days and let him out on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. I was totally freaked out about that cuz I didn't know how he'd react to me putting him in jail so I went and stayed at my brother's house that night.
I talked with the cop earlier in the day and he said that they were waiting to hear what I wanted to do about pressing charges but he didn't think AA was a threat. But, I don't know why but I was just so stressed out that I figured I'd listen to my gut for a change. He didn't call because, apparently the police kept his phone. But, I called him just to see if he would answer cuz I kind of wanted to get it out of the way and see how he was reacting.
He was calm. Said he was sorry. Said he knew it was his own fault that he was in jail, etc. We talked again the next day cuz I had a bunch of questions like . . . what makes you decide at 2:30 in the morning that it's time to return my car? I thought that was odd. Also, why did he take it in the first place, etc. Some he answered, some he didn't.
He asked me to please not leave him which I thought was interesting. I explained there was no leaving cuz there was nothing to leave. That anything we'd been starting to build went away when he stole my car. He asked me to think about it so I agreed knowing full well, there's no way in hell I'd be with him. I called him back yesterday (and it took all day to get ahold of him, again) and told him that I'd thought about it and that I didn't want to see him anymore.
So, he left a bunch of stuff in my car and I can't decide whether to just throw it all out or try to get it back to him. I'm 90% sure that the best course of action is to just chuck it.
So . . . that's my story. Believe it . . . or not.
