Happy Memorial Day
No big plans this weekend. Had some people over for a BBQ yesterday and that was fun. I made the best damn fresh strawberry pie I've ever had (and I've had a lot of fresh strawberry pies) if I do say so myself. What, you might ask, would make a fresh strawberry pie so dang good (considering they're just a crust, fresh strawberries, and a glaze)? Well, in this case it was the crust. I don't generally like graham cracker crusts so I don't know that I've made one before but I decided to make one for this pie since they're so much easier than a regular pie crust. I looked up a recipe and . . . I put a little extra butter in the crust and cooked it a smidge longer than normal and it was so freaking good. It came out tasting like a crunchy buttery, nutty, caramel. Everyone went nuts over it. Sad thing is, I probably couldn't reproduce it to save my life (but I will try).
I succumbed to one of those tv commercials selling sure fire ways of doing things and . . . bought the topsy turvy tomato grower thing. It's interesting. I planted two tomato plants in the topsy turvy things and two in a big giant pot and I'll gauge the performances. Both sets are making about the same amount of progress as far as growth but, the most interesting thing about the topsy turvy plants is that they're growing in a u-turn. They're curving so that they grow upwards.
At first I was thinking that they're growing that way so that the tops of their leaves are exposed to the light but, they're growing towards the house, not towards the light (although, I've since rotated them so that their now facing the light). I'll post pictures to document their progress as they go along. With four plants, I'm hoping to get a bumper crop of tomatoes but, I'm not holding my breath. My biggest fear is that they get those big, huge, fat, disgusting green caterpillar things. Everytime I've planted tomatoes I've gotten them and they gross me out so bad that I abandon the plants and run away. Anyone know a good way to prevent or deal with those things?
