So, I started off the week, on Monday, by flying, head first, into an elevator where I crashed into the back wall and wrenched my right knee, left ankle, and right wrist. My knee and ankle still hurt. The fellow who was already in the elevator, when he stopped laughing, asked how I was and would I like help up but I refused because I was in too much pain and laid on the floor of the elevator holding the various injured parts and making wounded noises until we got to the ground floor where I let him help me up and limped out with what little dignity I had left.
On Tuesday I was hung over all day and walking into walls, doors, etc., because at dinner the night before (where I was rushing to when I crashed into the elevator) I nursed my wounds and bruised dignity by having several glasses of red wine.
On Wednesday, while giving a presentation to about 30 people, I turned quickly and slammed my right elbow into a thick metal bar and proceeded to dance in place for a good 30 to 60 seconds, still in front of the 30 people, saying things like, “Ouch! Ouch! Ouch!” and “Ouchy! Ouchy! Owww!” and “Damn!! That hurt!!!” and that sort of thing.
Thursday I found out that the last piece of the new application that was supposed to be ready for alpha release two days before (on Tuesday) wasn’t ready so I had to do a code review to figure out just how off this code was and . . . discovered that it’s a good 2 months before this code will be ready for alpha. The funny thing is, the developer who is writing this piece told me just one week before (last Thursday) that we were on schedule for a Tuesday release. How in the world he could say that is beyond me.
On Friday, the developer came in and threw a temper tantrum and quit, effective immediately. Given the fact that the second code review revealed that the code he had written was even further behind than we had first thought, I wasn’t surprised. I guess that he decided it was better to throw a fit and quit than face the exposure of the truth. Given the air of superiority that he gave off (we were always too inexperienced and unintelligent to understand his genius) I’m guessing his ego just couldn’t handle it.
The funny thing is . . . part of his tantrum was to say that he was stressed out because of trying to hit an unreasonable deadline but, it was a deadline set by him. It was the date that he said he would have the code finished by (it was actually the third deadline he set since he missed the first two). So, he was stressed out trying to hit an unreasonable deadline that he set.
The tragic thing is, after having several people look at his code, the consensus of opinion is that we will have to scrap all of it. Totally unuseable. I’m guessing that he suspected this was coming as well and added to his decision to cut and run. So, we basically lost about four months of work. Gone. And . . . we have to start from scratch. But, the silver lining is that at least now I know that we will actually get a product since the five developers I’m going to throw at this to get it done as soon as possible are all tried and true and ones that I know can produce results.
So, I’m spending the weekend hibernating in my Bay Area place with the kits, fireplace going non-stop, watching movies I love and feeding myself comfort food (pizza last night; a beautiful steak tonight with an artichoke).
Let’s hope next week is better cuz . . . this one sucked.
