Thanksgiving

Hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving.

Mine was, in a word, bunk. Probably the most boring Thanksgiving I can remember. Generally, our Thanksgivings are pleasant affairs with family and friends hanging out, eating, playing games and generally having a good time. Often my sister or her husband have an alcohol induced meltdown and go on verbal rampages but, we’re all used to it so we generally ignore them.

So, when my younger brother chose to host this year’s festivities and my sister decided not to come, I was looking forward to this year’s Thanksgiving being a better than average get-together.

Wrong.

First of all, my brother is currently going through a divorce and a mid-life crisis simultaneously which normally shouldn’t interfere with us all having a good time (we all hate his soon-to-be-ex-wife) but one did and the other didn’t.

The pending divorce had no impact but the mid-life crisis did. His goal is to play the field and not get serious about anyone for now which, we all agree is a good plan but, he’s not actually doing that. He’s dating a woman who is 16 years younger than him and who never chooses to attend any of these functions but insists on keeping him on the phone 75% of the time during them.

For instance, my brother’s children took him out to dinner for Father’s Day, the fling didn’t attend but texted and called him the entire time that they were out and my idiot brother spent more time talking and texting with her than paying attention to his kids which made them feel crummy. And . . . Thanksgiving was no different.

Normally that wouldn’t be that big a deal, we’re perfectly capable of having fun without him, but half of the people who were supposed to come changed their plans at the last minute so the group consisted of my brother, his two kids, his best friends and their kids and us (a total of 9 people) and everyone was flaky.

As soon as dinner was over, my bro went into his room and spent 3 hours in there on the phone with the fling. The youngest kid went off into my nephew’s entertainment room and played video games. The other three kids disappeared to various places – coming and going now and then but generally absent. And the other men plopped down on the couches and fell asleep.

That left me and the other grown woman alone, sitting in a big quiet house doing nothing. So we sat at the dining room table and drank wine and had a great conversation which I actually really enjoyed but, it didn’t feel like Thanksgiving.

My brother was finally dragged out of his bedroom (literally), everyone woke up, and the kids came back but it was fairly late by then so we played a couple of hands of Liar’s Dice (with the chick calling my brother every 15 minutes) and then everyone went home.

All in all, pretty lame.

Christmas is scheduled to be at our place in Tahoe and I’m seriously considering cancelling. If I have to spend another day watching my brother text and talk on the phone all day, I’ll probably clobber him or take the phone out of his hand and tell the dumb ass bitch that she’s being fucking inconsiderate by keeping him on the phone all goddamn day when she knows he has guests or is in a social situation and that if she really needs to be in that constant of contact with him she should just fucking come to the gig.

Hope your day was better than mine!
