June 20, 2009

I love the smell of Scout's fur when she's been laying outside in the sun. It's all warm and it smells like fresh air and sunshine with a hint of vanilla (not sure why). Her fur is different from Jack's. He's more fluffy and her fur is more shiny and smooth. Jack's sunshined fur smells good too but his undertone is dust, not vanilla.

My doc got my test results back and, as I figured, he called yesterday saying that they were so awful (I'm paraphrasing) that I have to come in to discuss changing my medication. Apparently my sugar is high (no surprise there). If I were a horse, they'd shoot me right now. My right eye has been puffing up off and on for a couple of months. I just assumed it was allergies but the other day's super puff made me realize it's not likely since allergies don't usually hit only one spot -- at least with me. On top of that I've been short of breath and having bouts of losing my equilibrium.

They're not dizzy spells, I'll just all of a sudden be falling over and have to catch myself to stop myself from completely falling and I feel kind of weird for a couple of moments. The scary part is that they happen all different times -- when I'm in the shower, when I'm sitting still (like I just had one a moment ago), walking down stairs, walking in a straight line, etc. I haven't noticed having one while driving but the other day when I was getting out of my car to get gas I had one of the worst ones ever. I don't seem to have them while lying down either. I'm going to the doc on Wednesday about my blood work so I'll ask about it then.

I watched Hancock last night and . . . I liked it. They say that your nose and ears continue to grow your entire life and . . . Will Smith seems to be proof of that. His nose seems to be getting bigger and blobbier. He used to be about a 9.5 in my book but he's down to about an 8 now.

I also watched Wall-E (which I'd already seen) and love that movie. Only Pixar could make a cockroach cute. The one thing I can't figure out is why they didn't incinerate all that trash or shoot it out into space. They could even have lit everything on fire before they shot off into space and in the time they were gone (which appears to have been a very long time) the world would have righted itself. But, I think it's Pixar's sly way of pitching for us to recycle. :)

Right now I'm sitting out on my deck, drinking a cup of coffee and eating a healthy breakfast (low fat granola with low fat yogurt . . . bah!) cuz I'm afraid my lifelong butter intake may be contributing to my current health issues and don't want to exacerbate anything. I'm looking at my "garden" -- still only the one little lonely Roma tomato but I see that it has doubled in size so that's good.

My friend T and I have pretty much decided that we'll be going to Paris for our sans-mans vacation -- that is if I can find my damn passport. I used to know exactly where it was but, it seems to have wandered away. It's driving me nuts trying to think of where I might have put it. If I can't find it, we'll shift to a domestic trip (won't have time to get a replacement) cruising the Deep South. We're thinking Memphis to Nashville to Ashville to Savannah.

I'm heading up to Tahoe for a few days -- until Tuesday -- so may not blog much while I'm there.

Tomato Update

Week 5 of the great tomato experiment. So far none of those big gross green caterpillars. If they show up, the whole thing is over. I'll abandon the plants cuz they give me the heebee jeebees.

My deck has become a veritable garden.

June 17, 2009

I woke up around 5:30 this morning and my right eye was swollen shut. That eye has been bugging me for a couple of months now -- getting puffy and feeling swollen. Never as bad as it was this morning so I've been writing it off to allergies, etc., but it occurred to me today that . . . allergies wouldn't just keep attacking my right eye and nothing else.

I put a cold compress on it and went back to bed and woke up around 9:00 and could open the eye. It was still very swollen but I could see out of it. I jumped in the shower and got ready for work. By the time I got there it was 11:20 and I had to run into another interview. I liked this guy but his skillset isn't quite what we're looking for. Unfortunate.

After that I wandered down to my office, put out a couple of fires, ate a salad and then spent the rest of the afternoon with my boss hanging around my office. We finally set a launch date for the new apps and . . . it's extremely aggressive so it'll be an interesting couple of weeks.

My boss finally wandered away and I pulled my key folks into a meeting to tell them about the aggressive launch date and plan what needs to be done. That took me to 6:30 so I left. Traffic was freaking absurd. It took me an hour to move 2.5 blocks so I broke out and drove out of downtown and then got on the freeway and doubled back.

I met my older bro for dinner at an Indian restaurant that I really like. We had butter chicken, lamb curry, naan stuffed with spiced cauliflower and rice. It was gooooood. We sat and chatted for a while and I was telling him about some odd symptoms that I was having (he works in the medical field) and he started scaring me about what they could mean so I'll be calling my doctor tomorrow.

Got home around 10:00, petted the cats, checked emails, talked with my friend T about where we want to go on vacation -- we're leaning towards London and Paris but . . . I need to find my passport -- and took a very hot bath. Now I'm laying here updating my blog and watching new Season 2 Dexter episodes (new to On Demand) and trying to go to sleep.

June 16, 2009

Well, the Bendryl worked cuz I slept until 9:30 this morning and once again woke up, looked at the clock, said, "YIKES!!!" and this time just washed my face, brushed my teeth, put my hair up in a ponytail, threw on some clothes and ran out the door.

Got to work in pretty good time, no traffic this week -- I think school being out has an impact on that. It was an okay day, interviewed a guy that I liked but his skills are too light even though he rated himself a 9 out of 10 in the particular language that we're looking for.

The contractor gal that wants to be hired came into my office to chat and saw the stack of resumes on my desk. She got a funny look on her face and went back to her desk. I do feel bad and still think that maybe I could make it work but, I dunno. I hate drama and she is a drama queen. I sorta feel like she's been on her best behavior cuz she wants to be hired but, that doesn't mean she can sustain it forever.

I was groggy all day from the Benadryls which sucked so I don't think I'll do that again. I left around 6:00 and took my groggy head home. Got in the car and called my friend T (the one who just split from her boyfriend) and told her that I thought we should take off on a vacation sans mans. She agreed so we're either going to head off to Europe (if I can find my passport and it's still valid) or somewhere in America that we've never been but always wanted to go to . . . the deep South. She was at work and I was in my car so we agreed to touch base tomorrow to decide for sure where we're going.

After talking with T, I talked with my friend D, she got the computer I sent and was using it today and was having a tough time adjusting to the new versions of the software on it but was amazed at the speed (her existing computer was pretty old and clunky). I went out on the dekc to check my garden (well, my 4 tomato plants) and . . . I HAVE MY FIRST TOMATO GROWING!!!

Isn't that the cutest thing you've ever seen?!?! This is on the Roma plant that is in the pot. The Topsy Turvy plants don't have any actual fruit on them yet but have flowers. Watering less seems to have stopped the problem with the yellow spots on the leaves - from what I can tell.

I just had some chicken parmesan for dinner (while I was catching up on my blog entries) and am going to start researching where I want to go for my vacation.

Cheers.

June 15, 2009

Not sure why but lately I've been sleeping in on weekdays. I seem to be falling into old habits of staying up really late and not going to bed until 1:00 in the morning. So, I woke up around 8:30 and jumped out of bed, jumped into the shower and threw on some clothes and headed to the office.

Work was okay, not too crazy and I left early because a friend of mine was in from out of town and we were meeting up for dinner. We met at my favorite Japanese restaurant and had a good time. The bummer is, the reason he was up was that the company he works for brought him up to tell him that he has 3 weeks to hit certain performance goals otherwise they're letting him go.

I've never known anyone who has been in that situation and I felt really bad for him but didn't know what to say. I said that it sucked and that they were jerks and all that stuff but his response was that he didn't blame them, that he'd fire him as well if he were them. It wasn't said in a depressed or mopey manner, he was being very pragmatic but still, it sucks. I feel bad for him cuz this isn't the best economy to be looking for a job and the type of job he does is not exactly a flooded market but it's a pretty full market with lots of folks looking for work.

Stupidly, during dinner, I drank a diet coke and some green tea and when I got home, wide awake, realized my mistake. I got online and found out that a friend of mine split up with her long time boyfriend. He decided that he needed to head to Asia for a few months to figure out what he wanted out of life. They were planning a big Summer trip for the entire month of August so, that's out. She's bummed but holding up fairly well.

Finally around 1:00 a.m. I went to the drug store to buy one of those PM type drugs (e.g., Advil PM or Tylenol PM) but when I looked at the ingredients, the sleep aid was just Benadryl and I have a big bottle of that at home. So I left and when I got home I took two Benadryls and went to bed.

June 14, 2009

Woke up this morning and made a fresh pot of coffee. The cats and I sat on the deck while I drank my coffee and just chilled. After a while I went in and did a little cleaning. Emptied the refrigerator. Changed the litter box.

Took a shower and went to Home Depot and bought stuff to make a new window screen and forgot to get all the other stuff that I actually went there for. Got home, had a salad for lunch, watched another Boston Legal episode and took a nap.

Woke up an hour or so later and decided to make my window screen. It was much easier than I thought it would be but . . . I took the advice of the guy at Home Depot who told me to cut the pieces 1" shorter than the size I needed (even though the instructions said 1 1/2") and . . . they screen was 1/2" too big all the way around. So, I had to take it all apart to fix it but, didn't get around to that yet.

Talked to my brother and found out that my nephew did not graduate High School. I had left a few messages because I knew it was coming up and hadn't heard anything. Apparently he's laying low and not returning anyone's phone calls cuz he's embarrassed (my nephew, not my brother). He's 5 credits short so he can go to Summer school and make them up. He's signed up for Summer school but we'll see what he does with it. I love the kid but, he's not the most fired up, motivated boy you've ever met.

By the time I got finished messing with the window screen it was dinner time. I didn't feel like cooking or going out so ate the leftover white rice with chili over it (no beans) and some onions and cheese sprinkled on it. It was pretty good!

Watched some recorded tv -- Law and Order Criminal Intent and In Plain Sight -- and then hit the hay early.

June 13, 2009

Woke up this morning and tested my blood sugar and it was hugely different between the two meters. One was over 300 and the other was high 200s so I used the solution to test them both and one showed 83 and the other 110. So, seems they're off by about 30 points. Kind of interesting. One is a meter requiring codes and the other doesn't. Not sure if that has anything to do with anything but, that's the only difference I know of.

I warmed up a cup of coffee from yesterday's pot and ate a bowl of cereal. Took my metformin and turned on the tv and started watching Dexter again. I finished off all the episodes for season one and all of the season two episodes available on On Demand.

Had some leftover Chinese food for lunch. Talked with H about things we're doing to the inside of the Tahoe house and ideas for the master bathroom.

My friend in AZ - D - bugged me into watching Boston Legal so I recorded some episodes and watched a couple and . . . it has potential but is odd. I emailed D about it -- asked her why Spader and Shatner were trying to join the Coast Guard.

I made some white rice and had it with leftover chicken curry from yesterday's Chinese restaurant delivery order. I chopped up some green onions and sprinkled them on top along with some almonds and raisins and coconut, it was pretty damn good. I pretty much did nothing much else for the rest of the day except hung out, wrote a little, and watched tv.

On Sunday I plan to go to Home Depot to get something to hold up the tomato plants and some fungicide or something for the ugly tomato plant.
