Life, Love and the Pursuit of Happiness

2011 will definitely go down as a memorable year in my life. Work's been nuttier than usual, personal life has been nuttier than usual, health has been sucky, etc.

On the health front:
Started feeling sick in March, did nothing, kept getting worse and finally, ended up in the emergency room in May with bronchitis, the start of pneumonia, bronchial spasms and severe asthma.  Got over that in late June.

Found a lump in my right breast in June. Had a mammogram and ultrasound and they said it looked like tissue and to just watch it but to holler if it grew. It grew so, two weeks later another ultrasound and biopsy which came back benign. But, with my family history they decided to remove it just to be safe. A niece was over the weekend before the scheduled surgery and starts telling me a story about her mom's grandma who was just diagnosed with breast cancer -- found a lump; mammogram and ultrasound; just tissue but watch it; got bigger; decided to remove it; phone call from the doctor saying . . . not only is it cancer but it is a super aggressive form and . . . she's stage 3. So I'm sitting there thinking . . . "Uhhhhh, you mean I can go through all this and it could still be cancer??" (she didn't know about my lump).

But, the surgery was Monday and they called on Wednesday or Thursday to say -- no cancer. Yay!!

But, they want me to think about getting the test to see if I have the breast cancer gene -- would you? All the men in my life are pushing me to get it but . . . the women have been 50/50. One friend made a good point -- she also has rampant breast cancer in her family tree -- that unless you're planning to take part in one of the suggestions for mitigating the risk (tamoxifen or elective mastectomy) if you find out you have the gene, why get tested? Which is, I thought, a good point so . . . lots to think about.

A week before I went for the biopsy, I got bronchitis and a sinus infection . . . AGAIN.

Now I have a toothache.

Work front:
Don't even know where to begin but, in a nutshell: we merged with another company which has 0 women in positions of authority or power; CEO and CTO can't handle me cuz I "just says what she thinks"; got a retention bonus; struggle everyday to not tell them what I REALLY think (which is that they don't understand our space at all and are a hindrance to the company's success not to mention misogynistic jerks).

Personal front:
Dated a crazy person who did all that crazy stuff. Met and dated a great guy. Moved in with him. Etc.

And the year is only half over. :-|
