Middlesex

I finished Middlesex late last week. I would give it 3.5 USGs. I enjoyed it but there were passages that annoyed me like when he was talking about Lefty's auto worker job. I understand that he was trying to drive home the repetitiveness of it but I think he could have cut out a few of the repititions.

I think I might have enjoyed it more if I had read it. The fellow who was doing the narration was kind of annoying. But, all in all, I liked it more than I disliked it. I also felt it had the same problem as The Virgin Suicides . . . starts off well, builds and builds but then . . . no climax and it just kind of fizzles out. I don't necessarily need a big bang but, if you're going to write in a fashion which feels like it's building up to something unusual or interesting or exciting, you should follow through. Otherwise you end up just looking like a mediocre writer who can't maintain a consistent level of writing.

But, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.
